Big Ben Roethlisberger has finally been cleared to play football for the Pittsburgh Steelers. The future Hall of Fame quarterback injured his elbow last season in week 2. He was unable to finish the rest of the season. Steelers fan’s know how valuable their quarterback is to their team. Without Ben in the lineup, the team’s offense is usually stuck in neutral. But with Big Ben back, the Steelers should give the AFC a run for their money.
Despite Ben’s stellar play on the field, he has been less than a model citizen off the field. According to Wikipedia, “On March 5, 2010, it was revealed that police in Milledgeville, Georgia were investigating Roethlisberger for a sexual assault inside the women’s restroom of the Capital City nightclub. The accuser, a then-20-year-old student at nearby Georgia College & State Universities, was seen at several establishments with Roethlisberger leading up to the incident, including posing for a photograph with him. Roethlisberger spoke with police the night of the incident and stated that he did have contact with the woman that was not “consummated” and afterward the accuser slipped and injured her head.” Big Ben would not be charged in this case.
On July 17, 2009, a civil suit was filed in Washoe County, Nevada District Court accusing Roethlisberger of sexually assualting Andrea McNulty, 31, in June 2008 in his hotel room while he was in Lake Tahoe for a celebrity golf tournament. This is the same tournament that Steph Curry, Aaron Rodgers, and Charles Barkley play in every year. According to McNulty, she was working as an executive casino host in July 2008 when she said Roethlisberger struck up a friendly conversation at her desk during the golf tournament. The next night she said Roethlisberger telephoned her to tell her that the television sound system in his room was not working and asked her to look at it. McNulty said she determined that the TV was functioning properly, but as she turned to leave, he stood in front of the door and blocked her, then grabbed her and started to kiss her.tournament.- Wikipedia. The two finally decided on a settlement in 2011.
Now lets talk about Big Ben in the year 2020. This past weekend, Ben Roethlisberger spoke to a Christian men’s group about his past addictions. He explained to group, in a virtual conference, that he had been addicted to alcohol and pornography. He attributes turning his life around to God and his wife. That without them, he doesn’t know where life would have taken him. He also spoke about his elbow injury. and that his faith in God helped him with his recovery. I actually commend Big Ben for speaking up about his addictions. Especially to people he didn’t know. Athletes are human too. We always rip them for things they do wrong, so we should also praise them for doing things right. Or in this case, Ben admitting when he was wrong. I hope Ben continues to walk with God, as well as mentor people who might be dealing with similar issues. Ben might only have a few years left on the football field, but he can continue to make a big difference off the field.
