Conor McGregor is still one of the biggest sports icons in the world. His brash, vibrant personality makes him hated by many, but loved by most. Similar to Floyd Mayweather, who he fought back in 2017. Conor is the biggest star in UFC history. Dana White may be the creator of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, but Conor made the shit popular. And that seems to be where this problem lies. Who really runs things in UFC?
Although Conor McGregor is the biggest draw in the sport, Dana White runs the show. Therefore, Dana White makes the rules. At least that’s what he believes. The last time Conor fought, was in UFC 246. That was back in January. He beat Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone ass in 40 damn seconds! According to Yahoo Sports, Conor was set for 2 more fights in 2020, but then came the COVID-19 virus. Everything in the world, stopped, including sports. Dana White didn’t let the corona virus stop the UFC. He figured out a plan to get his sport back on track, by organizing a safe place to hold fights. Conor McGregor wasn’t apart of this plan unfortunately. Conor announced his retirement from UFC, via social media in June. Although the world was set for the rematch between him and Khabib Nurmagomedov, it soon became clear that it wasn’t going to happen. This must have come as a big surprise to Dana White. McGregor is his biggest star. Without Conor as the headline, Dana was forced to promote other fighter. But without Conor, pay per-view money wouldn’t be as lucrative.
Fast forward to current events. Conor is back on social media, calling out potential opponents to fight. The problem is, he’s still “retired”. Dana White was recently asked about Conor McGregor and potential upcoming fights, and this is what he had to say. “This year, he’s retired. He doesn’t have a fight this year, and he won’t have a fight this year. Conor McGregor will not fight in 2020. I’m not saying he won’t fight in 2021, but I’m telling you we don’t have a fight planned for him in 2020. But I guarantee you he will not fight in 2020. Conor McGregor is retired.”- Dana White on the “My Mom’s Basement” podcast. via cbssports.com.
The power struggle between Dana White and Conor McGregor is real. Dana runs the show, but Conor is the Cash cow. McGregor has threatened to leave the sport before. His boxing match against Floyd Mayweather landed him over a 100 million dollars. Who needs the UFC if you can make money like that? The problem with that is Floyd is retired too. And he is the only person that can generate money like that. Conor has hinted at fighting Manny Pacquiao, but Dana White still has Conor under contract even though he’s retired. It looks like for now, Dana White controls the situation, but its only a matter of time before he bends on his stance. Remember, the UFC needs Conor McGregor.
