NFL’s new rule WILL RUIN the league!!!
The NFL, despite being extremely profitable, is starting to loose it’s value. With all the problems they faced last year, with the National Anthem, and players protesting, they continue to add more bullshit to their plate. This year, the NFL has implemented a new helmet rule where players who lower their helmet when making contact with another player will be assessed with a 15-yard penalty, and/or be fined as well.
NFL owners in May approved the new rule, which states, “It is a foul if a player lowers his head to initiate and make contact with his helmet against an opponent.” The rule applies to all players on the field at all times, and contact does not have to be to an opponent’s head or neck area; lowering the head and imitating contact to an opponent’s torso, hips or lower body is also a penalty (loss of 15 yards). –Tadd Haislop, sportingnews.com
So how the hell are you supposed to tackle anyone? If I’m a defender and I’m running full speed to tackle another player, how the hell am I supposed to stop on a dime and adjust myself to wrap up the player who’s going full speed as well. I mean honestly, is that something the NFL thinks is easy? These players have played football their entire lives. They were taught from a young age to hit/tackle players a certain way. It’s the same way that you taught them. The same way you’ve taught every player since you created the damn sport. So why the hell do you think they will be able to change their natural instincts so easily?
So far, in the 2 preseason weeks, there have been more penalties called for this ridiculous rule than I’ve ever seen. Players are not out here trying to target anyone; they are trying to make a football team. For all the rookies and new players to their teams, the preseason is a chance to show the organization that you deserve to make the team. But if you miss a tackle because you tried to follow this new helmet rule, or you do tackle the person and the call a penalty on you, you might wind up losing your job.
Bottom line, the rule has to go. My hope is that the NFL is using the preseason to test out if the rule is worth enforcing. The clear answer is no. This is football. If you’re going to keep changing every rule, it will not be football anymore. I know it’s a violent game but, so do the players. They want to play the sport that they grew up playing, and that’s the game I want to watch. Not 15 yard penalties every 5 minutes.
There is no “make adjustment” to the way you tackle. Even in a perfect form tackle the body is led by the head. The rule is idiotic and should be dismissed immediately. When you watch rugby players tackle they are still lead by their head. Will be flag football soon. – Richard Sherman, San Francisco 49ers
